>> Travel back in time to one of your favorite childhood memories at Lake Tiak-O’Khata where you will feel like you are back at summer camp.
Lake Tiak-O’Khata is located in Louisville, Mississippi and is a fun filled place for the whole family. Whether you are relaxing out in the water or just enjoying the beautiful scenery, there is something for people of every age to enjoy.
Lake Tiak-O’Khata is a long standing family tradition to Mississippians. The lake is a Smyth family-owned establishment that has been in business since 1957 when the first cabins were built on site. The lake itself was constructed in 1954 on top of historic land near the original Smyth family house, which was built in the CivIl War era, and it still stands today.
The name Tiak-O’Khata means “Lake of the Pines” in Choctaw Indian. The family members decided on this name presumably because most of the lake area and park area is surrounded by the towering trees that guide you throughout the premises.
Not only does Lake Tiak-O’Khata have cabins and motel style rooms, the addition of multiple dining and meeting spaces make the lake a unique place for a number of events and celebrations. The family-friendly environment is open to all kinds of day outings and large events like weddings and family reunions that the property is well equipped to host.
Along with their outdoor activities, there are also wonderful eating accommodations including their own restaurant that provides catering, daily breakfast menus and a daily lunch buffet. The food is also available for carryout or dine-in. As you peruse the menu, you will see that the food they offer is primarily Southern favorites along with various options that will satisfy any appetite. The hearty and comforting food is perfect to enjoy after a day out in the water or – if you’re an early riser, grab breakfast and enjoy it lakeside as the sun rises.
One of the things on the menu that caught my eye was the Chicken Pot Pie with the simple description: “Grandma Ruby’s Original Recipe!” Naturally, I had to try it.
Grandma Ruby helped create Lake Tiak-O’Khata back in the day, so the pie was sure to be a well-loved classic that had endured on the menu since the beginning. When it arrived on the table, my first thought was that the crust itself looked so delicious and unlike any other pot pie I have had before.
When I took my first bite, you could hear the spoon break through the crispy and flaky crust into the creamy chicken. I did notice that there were no vegetables in the chicken mixture, but it was so rich and flavorful, who really needs vegetables? This dish was definitely a home run, but I do recommend splitting it with someone because the dish itself is huge.
I also tried a cup of the Homemade Seafood Gumbo with chicken, sausage, and Gulf shrimp which was equally as delicious as the pot pie with its buttery roux. There was also a wide ranging buffet with lots of Southern classics to choose from like fried chicken and cornbread with an abundance of sides.
If you are seeking a day trip that is fun for the whole family or a quiet and relaxing weekend getaway, Lake Tiak-O’Khata is an enjoyable place to go in Mississippi for any occasion.
